Where the ranges come from
Rough guidance, not an official standard.
| Account size | Rough usual range |
|---|---|
| Under 10K followers | 2% to 6% |
| 10K to 100K followers | 1% to 3% |
| 100K to 1M followers | 0.5% to 2% |
| 1M followers and up | 0.3% to 1.5% |
There is no single official benchmark. Published studies measure engagement in different ways, by followers, reach or views, with or without saves, so their averages for the same platform range from well under 1% to over 5%.
Two findings show up again and again. Engagement usually drops as an account grows, and brand accounts tend to show lower rates than creators. Rival IQ's 2025 benchmark of brand accounts put the typical Instagram post at about 0.36% of followers, and HypeAuditor's study of more than 36,000 influencer accounts found engagement falling as follower counts rise.
The ranges here are set from that spread to give you a rough sense of where you stand. The most useful comparison is with your own posts from last month.
How to use it
Pick recent posts
Choose 3 to 10 posts from the last month or so. Leave out anything boosted with ads.
Add up the numbers
Add the likes and comments, plus saves and shares if you can see them in Insights, and count the posts.
Change one thing
Try one change, like a clearer call to comment, then check again in a few weeks with the same method.
Questions
Short answers about the tool and the numbers behind it.
Add up the likes, comments, saves and shares on the posts you picked, divide by the number of posts, then divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. That's the average share of your followers who interacted with each post.
It depends on your size. Smaller accounts usually see higher rates because their followers know them more personally. As a rough guide, a few percent is common under 10,000 followers and about 1% to 3% between 10,000 and 100,000. Your own trend over time tells you more than any average.
Yes, if you have them. Instagram shows saves and shares per post in Insights, and both show that a post was worth keeping or passing on. Leave them empty if you don't have them and the calculator still works.
Some divide by reach or views instead of followers, some leave out saves, and some only look at Reels. Use the same method every time you check, and compare yourself with yourself.
